Sun, Sky and Sea

There’s a brief moment during sunset, especially at the African coastline, when the sun, the sea and the sky come together to paint a picture. It is a brief moment. It starts with the sun transforming into an orange ball with soft light. As it slowly dives into the horizon, it sends rays that gently kiss the sea, in spectacular fashion, floating on the sea like an orange blanket caught in a wavy motion. The cloud above seems to adapt, soaking some of the light as if to reflect the sea below.

The image is so profound you can almost hear it, and the silhouette of floating boats with sails going to the deep sea for a night of fishing completes the picture.

Everything about sunset images is as cliches as looks and sounds. It is probably one of the most photographed moments of the day, deservedly so. But my theory is that when we catch any images of moments of nature, we relegate its beauty. But every day, the temptation to put it on record as a moment of history, a memory in our personal lives is hard to overcome.

In Unguja- Zanzibar, the canoes, boats and ships dance playfully at the harbour. When the sunset meets them, they become the last pieces of art.

Nature has standards. Humans greatly influence nature and sunsets in Unguja, tell you that.
